Abstract:  For years I have seen the commercial for Roombas on TV, and honestly, I thought it was a scam. I always thought to myself that these things don’t clean good, or they won’t clean the entire floor. I had a lot of doubt in the product and never r...

Good:  So Far: Finds its own charging base; cleans all over the house; extra parts are easy to get; I don’t have to do a thing except empty it out when it is done!
Bad:  I wish it had a larger bin!
Bottomline:  Today I unboxed and set up my recently received iRobot Roomba 560 evaluation unit. I figured it might be fun for those of you who are curious to see what’s involved…and then we could send it on a test run together. Consider this part one ...

Good:  Vacuums for you; self-charging; scheduling; easy to use; fun to watch.
Bad:  Needs to be emptied a lot; can get tangled in tough obstacles.
Bottomline:  iRobot, whose name was lifted from Isaac Asimovs popular sci-fi short story series, has been designing anything from housecleaning home robots to tacticle robots to even robots for developers and educators. We got our paws on one of iRobots latest Ro...

Good:  Idiotproof. Clever enough to avoid stairs. Charges itself
Bad:  You still have to empty it. Likes the occasional rug to chew
Bottomline:  Cheap robo-vacs used to be a no-no, but this one is top-notch. Not Dyson standards admittedly, but far more relaxing ...

Good:  Completely automatic cleaning, rechargeable battery, docking station included, programmable cleaning schedule
Bad:  Relatively slow, battery life is limited, too much furniture can create a problem
Bottomline:  The fifth-generation iRobot Roomba (model 560) takes vacuuming to a new level. Like its predecessors, the Roomba employs sensors to automatically maneuver around carpeted and bare floors, using brushes and vacuum suction to pick up dust, dirt, pet hai...

Good:  Sealed chassis to prevent dust clogging its sensors. Bigger wheels. More powerful motor. Modular design for easier repair jobs. New "lighthouse" feature for multiroom cleaning. Better side brush for improved wall cleaning. Anti-tassel technology. Can prog...
Bad:  Still gets caught on cords and loose wires. Lighthouse feature far from perfect. Takes a lot longer than using a regular upright vacuum.
Bottomline:  The latest Roomba takes a while to get the job done, but it boasts a slew of new features and improvements. Unfortunately, its coolest feature, the ability to clean from room to room and then return home for recharging, proved problematic....

Bottomline:  There are plenty of reasons to buy a Roomba. Buy it because you want to bring the day of the proper robot butler a bit closer; buy it because you like neat gadgets; buy it because youd like to own a nice piece of animatronic artwork, which is elegant...
